I have to admit this is a subject I struggle to pin down my own views. A month or so back I was part of an online group reading Packer’s Knowing God. It was his chapter on the 2nd Commandment that created the most debate. I asked the following question but no one really tried to answer it. – The 2nd commandment says that we are not to make any image of anything in heaven or earth. Yet the Ark of the Covenant was topped by two cherubim (Exodus 25:22) . Would love to hear your thoughts.
Reverence does have a setting implied. What is a lack of honor of my grandfather at his funeral is different than lack of honor of him at a family picnic. Biblical word-images also do not adress all aspects of His glory, but are appropriate for their serting.
